Each year, Betzalel mounts three to four exhibitions tied to the Jewish calendar — open calls, juried selections, and community openings that bring art and tradition together.

Passages
Rosh Hashanah marks a turning point in the Jewish year — a moment to look back at where we've been and look ahead to where we're going. It is the season of teshuvah, of return and renewal, when we stand at a threshold between one chapter and the next.
Passages takes that idea and gives it form. A gate. A doorway. A window, a path, a bridge, an arch — each piece in this exhibition captures a moment of crossing, drawn from the work of artists across our community. Together, they reflect what was, and what is meant to be.
Betzalel Art Gallery is proud to bring this exhibition to Temple Israel as part of our ongoing celebration of Jewish life and community through art. Come welcome the new year with us, and see the season of return through the eyes of the artists who call this community home.

Spring Harvest
The first fruits of the season have always been an act of gratitude — an acknowledgment that growth is a gift, not a given. This Shavuot-themed exhibition invited artists from across Long Island to bring their own experience of renewal, abundance, and beginning again to the gallery walls. Dedicated in loving memory of Aviva (Tracy) Kreutzer, whose spirit of generosity and joy lives on in every work displayed here.

Women: Hidden to Revealed
Esther did not announce herself. She waited, she watched, and when the moment came, she acted with extraordinary courage. This exhibition — timed to both Purim and Women's History Month — brought together artists from across Long Island to explore what it means to step out of the shadows. Themes of hiddenness, revelation, and resilience resonated across every background and belief system represented in this show. The story of women finding their voice belongs to everyone.

Light Returns Home
Light returning in the darkest season is not only a Jewish story — it is a human one. This Chanukah exhibition gathered artists from across the Long Island community to explore what homecoming means: the miracle of return, the triumph over darkness, and the warmth of a flame that refuses to go out. Held at Betzalel Art Gallery at Temple Israel, Long Beach, the works on these walls spoke to anyone who has ever waited for the light to come back.

The mountain has always been a place of revelation — in Torah, in art, and in the human imagination. This Shavuot-themed exhibition invited artists from across the Long Island community to explore peaks, horizons, and sacred heights through their own creative lens. Whether rooted in Jewish tradition or drawn from a lifetime of personal experience with landscape and spirituality, each work asked the same question: what do we find when we climb high enough to see clearly?

Celebrate the Beauty of Spring
Tu B'Shevat — the new year of the trees — is Judaism's oldest invitation to pay attention to the natural world. This exhibition answered that invitation with works exploring growth, renewal, and the quiet miracle of things coming back to life. Artists from across the Long Island community brought their own relationship with the natural world to the gallery, connecting Jewish tradition's reverence for the earth to a universal human experience of wonder.

GlowUp 2024!
A celebration of light in the heart of winter. GlowUp brought together the warmth of Chanukah and the creativity of the Long Island arts community in an evening that was part exhibition, part artist market — hanging works lining the gallery walls alongside artisan tables where artists presented and sold their work directly to the community. Jewish and secular artists side by side, united by a single theme: light wins.

Sukkah Party & Fall Artist Reception
There is no more communal structure in Judaism than the Sukkah — open on all sides, built to welcome every guest. This festive fall reception celebrated Sukkot under an actual Sukkah at the side entrance of Temple Israel, bringing together artists, community members, and guests from across Long Island for an evening of art, joy, and light refreshments. Co-sponsored by Temple Israel, The BACH Jewish Center, and West End Arts — a secular visual artists guild — the event embodied Betzalel's core belief that Jewish tradition and the broader arts community belong under the same roof.

A celebration of love through art, timed to Tu B'Av — the Jewish day of love. Opening brunch reception 11am–2pm. Gallery open by appointment. Explored themes of connection, unity, and the beauty of relationship through all mediums.

A Time for Freedom
Coinciding with Passover, this exhibition asked artists from across Long Island to wrestle with the oldest questions: What does it mean to be free? What does it mean to be bound? Works in painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, and mixed media offered literal and figurative interpretations of liberation — drawing on Jewish tradition while speaking to experiences of oppression and freedom that resonate across every culture and community. Artists from diverse backgrounds brought their own histories to these walls, and the result was a conversation that transcended any single tradition.

Herstory: The Art of Women
A Purim celebration that was equal parts art, community, and joy. Beginning with a Megillah Reading at 10:30am and followed by a gallery brunch, this event honored the women heroines of Jewish tradition — and by extension, the mothers, friends, and figures of courage in every community. Hosted by the Long Beach Jewish Experience and Betzalel Art Gallery in partnership with BACH Jewish Center and Temple Israel, the morning brought together the Long Island Jewish community across denominations and backgrounds. The heroines on these walls belonged to everyone who walked through the door.

Illuminations
Betzalel's inaugural Chanukah exhibition — and our first opening reception — brought together the Long Island arts community to celebrate light, resilience, and the enduring power of creative expression. Works explored the miracle of light, hope in darkness, and the spirit that keeps a flame burning against every odd. Presented in partnership with the Long Beach Jewish Experience, this opening marked the beginning of what Betzalel was always meant to be: a gallery where Jewish tradition and the broader community meet, illuminate each other, and go home changed.

High Holidays
A deluxe opening reception held immediately following Rosh Hashanah services — apple and honey martinis, sushi, and walls full of art exploring the sweetness, weight, and beauty of the High Holiday season. Works engaged with the symbols, prayers, and spirit of the Days of Awe: forgiveness, renewal, the Book of Life, and the particular kind of hope that only a new year can hold. Sponsored by the Long Beach Jewish Experience, Temple Israel, and West End Arts, and open to all — this reception was Betzalel at its most community-facing, welcoming guests from across the Long Island Jewish community into a space where art and tradition deepened each other.

Spring Bounty
Betzalel began here. Our inaugural exhibition at Temple Israel celebrated the beauty of spring through the lens of Torah and Jewish heritage — and the Long Island community showed up in extraordinary numbers. More than double the projected 75 guests attended, filling the gallery with energy, conversation, and connection that confirmed what Betzalel's founders had always believed: this community was hungry for exactly this. A collaborative initiative with the Long Beach Jewish Experience, Temple Israel, and West End Arts, the opening brought together local artists across all mediums and drew a crowd that reflected the full breadth of Long Island's Jewish and arts communities. It was the beginning of everything.
Betzalel is volunteer-run and donor-supported. Every show happens because of community generosity.
